Girl Talk Thursday: Roommates

Roommates. I’ve been lucky, the closest I’ve ever had to a roommate was the sister.  Yeah, that was bad enough.  To say me and the sister don’t do well together in confined spaces would be a slight understatement.  Good job we got our own rooms after a few years.

You see, I never went to boarding school (but that life in the novels always appealed to my younger self) or university so I never had the chance of sharing a room with a random stranger.  That said, university may not have helped on that one; I can’t remember the last person here who had to share a room at uni.

So, I have no nightmare stories to tell, no hilarity or moments of connection.

Now, you could say, my roommate is the husband.  I love him, but he’s messy, and snores (louder than a rocket launching) and hogs my side of the bed as well as his own.  At least I can say he’s cuddly in the middle of the night.

In the UK at university you don’t share a room – but in the US you do. Sadly, as a student in the US, I wasn’t very keen on either of the room-mates I had (separately). Had hardly anything to do with either which, in retrospect, is vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv odd seeing as we were sleeping in a bunk bed!! So hard to imagine now.

I was at boarding school too and then it was dormitories for the first 4 years then a room of two in the fifth and then I left. I quite enjoyed it in retrospect. It was like spending 24/7 with friends. Fond memories. Of course there were big lows as well as the highs, but such is life.

  • Consider yourself lucky. I would gladly give up my horror stories for having never been forced to live with batshit crazy women. Though, none of them were slobs who snored in my ear all night as my current “roommate” does. I agree, the cuddling makes it worth it.

Closest I’ve come is TLP and even he’s not here all the time.

  • Ah, my husband roommate snores, too, as does the cat. I think that’s the only bad habit I have to contend with now that I didn’t previously experience with my female roommates.

  • Why are men always messy? I never met one that actually picked up after himself.

  • My first year at Uni I shared a room for 3.
    It sucked.
    I moved out.
One girl was lovely but went to sleep very early and I am a night owl.
The other girl was a twisted witch.

    end of sharing thanksverymuch!

  • What is is with men, messiness and snoring, or should I say husbands?

Some of the stories I’m hearing make me very glad not to have had non-family roommates!
