TB used to be obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine. Well ok, I was obsessed and he just picked up on that. Over approximately two years we spent a small fortune on collecting as much of the Tomy Motor Road & Rail range as we could. The tracks themselves were an enduring set but at six TB’s now grown out of Thomas and the set has been sitting boxed up in our garage. Then Tomy sent us their Tomica Big City Set for me TB to review.
I could see us spending another small fortune on collecting a new set of trains and track and was rather happy to find that the tracks from the Tomica range fit with those from the Motor Road & Rail. All we needed was floor space and time and maybe for TB to listen to me. I mean how was I supposed to craft the perfect track if he kept going against my ideas?
Now for the parent details. The track is easy to put together and won’t pull apart if it gets knocked. Especially important for the girders and sloped rail – the people on your train wouldn’t want to crash down from that height! It’s all made of solid stuff. It might be a bit much to say it’s indestructible, but it’s pretty close. The trains run at a good speed (the one included in the Big City set has two speeds) and although they do require batteries (this one a 1 x 1.5V ‘C’ (LR14) ) they don’t run down too quickly, even when your kid wanders off and leaves the train running around the track.
Best of all, though, is the Tomica range’s versatility. With vehicles, trains, accessories, destinations and playsets priced from £2.99 to £69.99 you can add to the one set as quickly or slowly as your kids like and just because it gives you a picture on the box, doesn’t mean you have to follow it. Tomica has given us many hours of fun – we all look forward to starting over again once Little Mister is big enough to appreciate it.
